MYTH BUSTERS - SNAKES

SNAKE MYTH: All snakes are dangerous and must be killed

BUSTED: It is commonly thought that snakes are all dangerous when in fact this is not true. While it is true many snakes can be venomous (particularly in Australia), they are in fact only dangerous when harmed in the first place. All snakes have different personalities and temperaments. Those most at risk to humans are snakes that are both highly venomous and high strung (e.g The Coastal Taipan).

SNAKE MYTH: Snakes bring bad luck or are a curse

BUSTED: In fact snakes are beneficial (as explained above) to both the environment and people. Without snakes, we would be over run by vermin that would destroy crops, chew through electrical cables, plague people with disease and filth damaging our way of life.

SNAKE MYTH: Snakes Try to attack

BUSTED: This is false. Snakes will leave you alone if you leave them alone.

BUSTED MYTHS ABOUT SNAKES

Snakes are an essential part of nature. Any efforts to kill snakes effectively damages other animals and negatively affects humans too. Further, in most Western countries, snakes are a protected species. It is our goal at the Snake Bite Program to work with governments in all countries to make the killing of snakes unlawful and to educate communities about snakes and snake bites to prevent further misunderstanding.
